Atlanta Two Race Report
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (March 2, 2015) – For the second straight Saturday the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga. was the site of a round of the 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series. 53,537 fans were in attendance making the two-weekend total 104,560. Fox Sports Two aired the event live.
The NASCAR series was in Atlanta as well, and many of the Sprint Cup drivers preparing to compete in Sunday’s Folds of Honor Quick Trip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway were on hand to watch Monster Energy AMA Supercross. Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) is the only team in Monster Energy AMA Supercross that also fields a NASCAR effort, and many of the JGR drivers and crew members came out to support the supercross team, which was reciprocated by the supercross riders and crew on Sunday. The team also developed an infographic titled Two Sports One Team showcasing both the NASCAR and supercross teams side by side, which is attached and live at joegibbsracing.com here:
The second Atlanta event was a retro theme, and the AutoTrader.com/Toyota/Yamaha Team ran 1990 based YZ450Fs with special plastic provided by Cycra and graphics by Factory Effex. Weston Peick even had a 1990s style mullet dangling from under his team cap when he arrived at the stadium.
Peick transferred directly to the main event from heat one, Nicoletti transferred from semi two, but was then told he was being docked two positions for jumping on a red-cross flag and had to ride the LCQ. He holeshot the LCQ and led every lap to earn a gate for the main event. Peick blasted off the line at the start of the main event leading the pack. Peick, who is still recovering from a torn MCL and not yet able to train normally led until lap six, settling into fifth on lap 10 when an out of control rider failed to make a turn and sent his bike directly into Peick’s path knocking him down and relegating him to 10th position, which is where he finished. Nicoletti, who had been racing mid-pack the entire race collided with another rider on lap 17 which cost him several positions, he finished 17th.
Round 10 of the series will be held at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. on March 7. Fox Sports One will broadcast the race live starting at 7:30 p.m. (EST).
