John Shelburne is the Autotrader/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Race Team transport driver, in charge of the tractor and 53’ race trailer traveling to the supercross and motocross races each season. John logs approximately 55,000 miles each year, as well as maintains the race hauler.
John began working with ATVs when his brother Brent was an ATV racer. It wasn’t long before the pair were racing the ATV Nationals with John turning the wrenches for Brent. When Brent stopped racing Josh Starrett hired John to help him. Starrett was assisting a group of ATV racers get to and from events, as well as maintain equipment. Under Starrett, John learned how to drive trucks and obtained his CDL designation. John was then paired with the late Todd Vescovi, providing the tuning duties for Vescovi, and also handling the team’s transport duties. While traveling the national circuit Shelburne got to know and became friends with Wayne Hinson.
Shelburne’s next venture was a stint with NAC’s Racing. He hauled cars during the week and handled the team’s transport duties on the weekends. Over time the team developed into the Cannondale Factory ATV Racing Team. John also served as an in-house sales person during this time.
In 2000, John returned to his home in Bardstown, Kentucky, where he worked at T and T Honda. He still traveled to the races on the weekends. In 2007, he ran into his old friend Wayne Hinson at the Indy Dealer Show, where Hinson asked John to join him as the Factory Suzuki ATV Team’s transport driver. The team won three titles during John’s tenure, two with Dustin Wimmer and one with Josh Creamer. He then transferred to the Factory Suzuki Motocross Team for a year before moving to Dunlop to handle their motocross transport needs, as well as performing tire sales to privateers before joining the Autotrader/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Race Team in 2013. When John is not assisting JGRMX, he can be found racing RC cars and playing golf.
