Monster Energy Cup Race Report
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 18, 2015) – The fifth annual Monster Energy Cup was held at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. Fox Sports 2 broadcast the entire event live. Fox will re-air the event today at 2:30 p.m. (EST), and again at 4:30 p.m. (EST), check local listings. The broadcast ran a feature on our day with Make A Wish child Austin Coleman at our headquarters last summer where his family came to our shop and Austin rode his mini cycle with Justin Barcia at our practice facility.
The Monster Energy Cup format differs from that of the regular Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series races. There are three 10-lap races with the best of the three results determining the overall finishing order. If a rider wins all three races they win $1,000,000. If a rider does not win all three races but is still the overall winner they are awarded $100,000. There is also a joker lane that each rider must take once during each race, they can choose what lap they wish to take the lane as long as it is not during the first lap of the race.
Justin Barcia and Weston Peick did not get the starts they wanted at the beginning of race one. Barcia was 11th and Peick 19th after the first lap. Both Barcia and Peick began to move through the pack, however Peick went off the track briefly on lap four stalling his progress. At the checkers it was Barcia fifth and Peick 15th.
Barcia led race two with Peick 10th at the conclusion of the first lap. After some great racing at the front of the field and the mandatory joker lane pass through Barcia was third and Peick eighth.
Race three saw the teammates mid-pack at the start with Barcia seventh and Peick ninth. Barcia advanced to fourth at the finish with Peick 10th. Barcia’s five, three, four race results gave him fourth overall. Peick’s 15, eight, 10 finishes equated to 11th overall.
The next event for the AutoTrader.com/Toyota/Yamaha Team will be the opening round of the 2016 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship on Jan. 9, 2016. The television broadcast schedule is not yet posted.
