Justin Barcia has been suffering from an injury to his thumb sustained just prior to the season opener the week of Jan. 4. An MRI revealed he was suffering from a torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament, commonly known as Skier’s Thumb.
After trying to work through the pain during the first two rounds of racing he has determined that the injury will require surgery. “It’s a tough pill to swallow with how hard I worked this year and was ready to be in the mix for race wins. I tried to race but it’s just not realistic with how bad the pain is. Thanks to my team, family, sponsors, fans and everyone who has stuck behind me. I will be back asap,” said Barcia. Phillip Nicoletti will substitute for Barcia during his recovery, which is expected to be six to eight weeks.
Barcia qualified for the main event in San Diego from Semi One, Nicoletti transferred through Semi Two. Barcia and Nicoletti both started at the rear of the field for the main. Despite the pain caused by the injured thumb, Barcia began moving through the pack ultimately finishing 11th. Nicoletti, who has not raced since November of 2015 finished 21st.
Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. will host the series for round three of 17. Weston Peick will return to racing in Anaheim. Fox Sports One will air the race live starting at 10:00 p.m. (EST).
